About TheCompressJPEG

TheCompressJPEG is a small, focused tool for shrinking JPEG images to a target file size. It is built for anyone who needs a clean, no-nonsense way to make their photos smaller without fiddling with quality sliders.

Our Story

TheCompressJPEG started as a side project in 2024. We were tired of compressors that asked you to guess at quality percentages and then surprised you with the wrong file size. So we built one that works the other way around: tell it the size you need, and it figures out the rest.

Behind the scenes the tool runs a quick search through different quality settings to find the highest quality version of your image that fits the size you asked for. Today TheCompressJPEG is used by people in the US and around the world.

Our Mission

To make image compression simple, private, and free. No accounts, no upsells, no nagging.

What Makes Us Different

Who We Serve

Our users include US passport and DS-160 visa applicants needing photos under 20KB, college students uploading Common App and FAFSA pictures at exactly 50KB, bloggers optimizing WordPress featured images at 100KB for Core Web Vitals, designers preparing 200KB Instagram and Facebook ad graphics, photographers compressing portfolio shots to 500KB, and professionals attaching high-quality 1MB images to Gmail — all in one tool, all for free.

Our Technology

TheCompressJPEG uses a smart binary-search algorithm written in PHP with the GD imaging library. For every uploaded image, we run up to 8 iterations across JPEG quality factors 10 through 95, converging on the precise quality value that meets your size target. The result: files that look as good as the original but weigh exactly what you need.
