Privacy policy

This policy explains what data this site collects, what it does not collect, and why the answer for your images is nothing at all.

Your images and documents

Files you add to any tool on this site are processed entirely by your own browser. They are read from your device into the memory of the browser tab, transformed there, and written back to your device as a download. They are never transmitted to this site's servers or to any third party, because no part of the tool sends them anywhere.

As a direct consequence: we cannot see your files, cannot store them, cannot recover them if you lose them, and cannot be compelled to hand them over. There is nothing to hand over.

The document editor stores your draft in your browser's local storage on your own device. That data never reaches us either, and you can remove it at any time by using the clear option in the editor or by clearing your browser's site data.

Information we do collect

Contact form

If you send a message through the contact form we store the name, email address, subject and message you provide, together with the time of submission and the IP address the request came from. This is used to reply to you and to identify abuse. Messages are kept for as long as they remain useful and are deleted on request.

Server logs

Our hosting provider records standard web server logs — IP address, timestamp, requested URL, referrer and user agent. These are used for security and for diagnosing faults, and are retained for a short period before being discarded.

Analytics

We use privacy-respecting analytics to count page views and understand which tools are used. Where a third-party analytics provider is configured by the site administrator, its own privacy policy applies to the data it collects, and any such provider is listed in the cookie section below.

Advertising

This site may display advertising. Where an advertising network is used, that network may set cookies and collect information about your browsing in order to select adverts. Advertising is never shown above the tool, and adverts never receive information about the files you process, because that information does not exist outside your browser.

Cookies and local storage

The site itself uses cookies only where they are necessary: a session cookie for administrators who sign in to the content management area. Local storage is used to remember your tool preferences and to hold document editor drafts on your own device.

Third-party cookies may be set by an analytics or advertising provider if one is configured. You can block or remove cookies in your browser settings; doing so does not stop any tool on this site from working.

Legal basis and your rights

Where the UK GDPR or EU GDPR applies to you, our legal basis for processing contact form data is legitimate interest — responding to an enquiry you chose to send us. Server logs are processed on the basis of legitimate interest in keeping the service secure and available.

You have the right to request a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it erased, to object to its processing, and to complain to your data protection authority. Since the only personal data we routinely hold is contact form correspondence, such requests are usually straightforward. Write to privacy@thecompressjpeg.com.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. The tools themselves collect nothing from anyone.

Data transfers and security

The site is served over HTTPS. Contact form data is stored in a database accessible only to site administrators. Because your files are never received, no transfer of them across any border ever takes place.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially the date at the top will be updated and the change described here. Continued use of the site after a change indicates acceptance of it.
