A small set of image tools that do their work inside your browser, built because the alternatives kept asking for an upload, an account, or both.

Why this site exists

Compressing an image is a solved problem. Every modern browser ships an image encoder, exposes it through the Canvas API, and can run the whole job on the machine already sitting in front of you. Despite that, most online compressors still ask you to upload your photographs to a server you know nothing about, wait in a queue, and then download them back.

That arrangement exists for the operator's benefit, not yours. It creates an account funnel, a rate limit to sell your way out of, and a copy of your file on infrastructure you cannot inspect. None of it makes the compression better.

thecompressjpeg.com takes the other approach. Everything happens in your browser tab. Your file is read from your own disk into your own memory, re-encoded there, and handed back to you. There is no upload endpoint to compromise, no retention policy to trust, and no queue to wait in. You can prove it: load the page, disconnect from the network, and compress an image anyway.

How the tools are built

The compression pipeline uses createImageBitmap to decode your file, draws it to an offscreen canvas, and encodes the result with canvas.toBlob at the quality you selected. Batches are distributed across a pool of Web Workers so that a hundred photographs do not freeze the interface. Target-size mode runs a binary search over the quality range, encoding repeatedly until it finds the highest quality that fits under your limit.

PDFs are assembled with pdf-lib and ZIP archives with JSZip, both in the browser. The document editor is built on Tiptap and stores its draft in local storage on your device.

The site itself is a Next.js application. The encoders are deliberately loaded only after you add a file, so the page itself stays fast for people who arrive and leave without using it.

What we hold ourselves to

  • No file ever leaves your device

    Not for processing, not for analytics, not for a queue. There is no upload endpoint in the compression path at all.

  • Every control does something

    There is no setting on this site that has no effect on the output, and no progress bar that is not tracking real work.

  • Honest labels

    A lossy encode is never described as lossless. If a tool cannot do something, we say so on the page rather than implying otherwise.

  • Honest numbers

    The results table reports what actually happened, including the cases where a file got larger or a target size could not be met.

  • No account, no quota

    No sign-up, no daily cap, no watermark and no feature reserved for a paid tier that does not exist.

  • Fast by default

    The tool is the first thing on the page and the first thing that loads. Heavy libraries wait until you actually drop a file.

What these tools do not do

It is worth being direct about the boundaries, because a lot of sites in this category are not.

  • No OCR. Nothing here reads text out of an image. A photograph of a page becomes a picture of a page in your PDF.
  • No AI upscaling or enhancement. No detail is invented. Enlarging an image makes it soft, and we do not pretend otherwise.
  • No cloud storage or sync. There is nowhere to save anything, by design.
  • No PDF editing. The PDF tool builds a new document from images. It does not open, merge or split existing PDFs.
  • No collaboration. The document editor is single-user and single-device.
  • No lossless JPEG. JPEG is a lossy format. Any site telling you otherwise is selling something.

Who builds this

I build software, and I work at the intersection of two things that turn out to be closely related: machine learning, and how search engines actually understand a page.

My background is in development and in machine learning and deep learning — the practical end of it, where a model has to run somewhere and produce something a person can rely on. That is the same instinct behind the tools here: the compression on this site runs in your browser, using the encoders the browser already has, because that is the honest way to do the job without asking anyone to hand over their files.

The other half of my work is semantic SEO. Not keyword density, but topical structure — how a subject decomposes into entities and attributes, how pages relate to one another, and how a site demonstrates that it actually covers a field rather than gesturing at it. That is why this site has a specification table on every tool page, why the FAQ answers are in the initial HTML, and why several pages state plainly what these tools cannot do.

The practical end: getting a model to run somewhere and produce something a person can rely on. It is also why the pages about AI upscaling say plainly that it invents detail rather than recovering it.

Colour management for print, legal questions about image rights, and anything medical or forensic involving image evidence. This site does not cover those and should not be relied on for them.

How the site is paid for

Running a site that does its computing on your device is unusually cheap, because we are not paying to process your images. Hosting costs are modest and covered by advertising placed below the tool, never above it and never in the way of the thing you came for.

We do not sell data, because there is none to sell — your files are never received in the first place. There is no premium tier, and adding one would mean deliberately withholding something that already works.
